You may not place a high priority on independence. You may prefer being comfortable, well-fed and warm over being independent, uncomfortable, and hungry. That’s your choice.

My concern is that we are seeing many more young men who seem to value being comfortable and well-fed over being independent and grown-up. Like you, these men don’t see the problem. They attach very little value to economic or spiritual independence.

But the online chat was only the beginning. Over the next two weeks, my article was reprinted in about three dozen major newspapers around the United States. On April 4, I went to the studios of National Public Radio in Washington, DC, to be the featured guest in a forty-minute interview on the NPR program On Point, broadcast nationwide.29 By the end of April I had received over one thousand e-mails from all around the country.

I threw out my original draft of this chapter. The e-mails I received turned out to be more interesting than anything I could say. In the remainder of this chapter, I’m going to share with you a few of the most provocative, most outrageous, and most profound of those e-mails.
